Goodbye Blackwood, Hello Florence Ribeiro
April 18, 2016
After over 50 years in Arcadia, the German Embassy Pretoria is moving to its new premises in Groenkloof this week. The new building on Florence Ribeiro Avenue offers German Ambassador Walter Lindner and his 85 staff members a modern working environment and high tech facilities. After being spread out over several buildings in Arcadia and Hatfield, the new German Embassy will once again reunite the different departments under one roof.
“We have many fond memories of our old home in Arcadia and we will certainly miss the proximity of the Union Buildings which were just a few steps away. But as our relationship with South Africa strengthened over the past decades the building became too small for us” explains Ambassador Lindner.

The new Embassy was developed and built by SnA Architects from Pretoria in close collaboration with the architects of the German Foreign Office in Berlin. Over 46 km (roughly the distance between Pretoria and Johannesburg) of IT and telephone cable had to be installed and ten containers full of equipment arrived from Germany. The overall office space totals 3.500 sqm.
The construction of the new Embassy took 20 months. During construction 150 permanent jobs were created. A further 250 temporary workers were involved on average per month.
The new facilities are open and invite sunlight. Its water and energy efficiency is more than 50% higher than the SA National Standard. While being located within an urban environment, the Embassy is surrounded by a green belt and allows a perfect view on the CBC Groenkloof sports fields.
“We would like to thank all our South African partners and the City of Tshwane for their cooperation. The new Embassy is a shining example of South African workmanship.” compliments Ambassador Lindner. “The investment of almost 90 milion Rand in the new building, infrastructure and equipment is also an investment into the strong ties between Germany and South Africa. We believe in a bright future for South Africa. ”
The German Embassy Pretoria is the second largest German Embassy on the African continent and among the top 25 German representations in the world. Over 40 locally employed staff work together with representatives from 10 German ministries.
Due to the relocation, the visa and consular section will reopen for its customers on 20 April.
The new Embassy is located at 201 Florence Ribeiro Ave, Groenkloef, Pretoria 0081 South Africa.
