Celebrating 25 years of German Unification

2 October 2015

German Ambassador in South Africa, Mr Walter Lindner and his partner Laura Sustersic hosted a reception at their official residence in Pretoria to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of German reunification. Pictured with them is Deputy Minister Luwellyn Landers of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa.

The German Foreign Office organized a hands-on project called “Together for unity” that happened simultaneously around the globe. Giant jigsaw puzzles, over 25 square meters in size and shaped like a map of Germany, were designed and assembled around October 3, 2015.

The jigsaw pieces in South Africa were decorated by various partner organisations ranging from the SA Navy, the Black Management Forum right to Mumsy orphanage in Soweto. Partners were totally free to decorate their individual pieces according to their perspective on Germany. The giant jigsaw puzzle was on display at the celebration.

Guests were entertained by the Grammy Award winning Soweto Gospel Choir and students from the German schools in Johannesburg and Pretoria sang the national anthems.
