Remark by H.E. Ambassador Vu Van Dzung at the opening lunch of the Vietnamese Cuisine week towards the 50 ASEAN Day

3rd August, 2017, Saigon Restaurant, Johannesburg

Dear H.E. Mr. Suprapto Martosetomo, Chairman of the Asean Pretoria Committee, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia
Ladies and gentlemen

Today, the Embassy of Vietnam is proudly hosting the opening of the Vietnamese Cuisine week towards the 50 Anniversary of the establishment of the South East Asia Association (ASEAN). Thank you very much your excellencies, ladies and gentlemen for saving your precious time to attend the event.

May I on this occasion to share with you some successes of ASEAN and contribution of Vietnam.

During 50 years of establishment and development, ASEAN has achieved many successes in all fields. We see at least there are 3 biggest successes.

First, ASEAN is a collection of Southeast Asian Nations of cultural diversity, distinct in terms of political institutions, but has come together into a successful organization that contributes to the maintenance of peace, stability, friendly relations among countries, creating a peaceful, stable and friendly environment for the people in the ASEAN Community to live and thrive together.

Second, ASEAN, from an organization of poor and backward economies, has become one of the most dynamic economic Community in the Asia-Pacific region, creating a large market of 630 million people with a gross domestic product of 3,000 billion USD, growth rate of 4.7% per year - that is high in the region as well as in the world.

Third, ASEAN has created a very important position that few sub-regional structure does. It is the cohesion not only within ASEAN through mechanisms, but also through such mechanisms in which with ASEAN plays the centre role, major countries in the world participate. These are related to politics, security and defense, which are the characteristics of ASEAN and the value of ASEAN both in the region and in the world.

Vietnam joined ASEAN in 1995, 22 years up to now, nearly half of ASEAN's 50 years of establishment and development. Since joining ASEAN, as a member, we have contributed positively and responsibly, which can be summarized as follows.

One is to contribute to the enlargement of ASEAN, bringing the ASEAN of six member countries into a community with the current 10 member states.

Second,  we are actively contributing to the building of the ASEAN Community, formally established by the end of 2015. So far, Vietnam has been one of the lead countries in achieving the ASEAN Community's objectives, with 95 % of targets are taken.

Third, in the role of coordinating the mechanisms with outside countries such as China and India, we have contributed by linking, expanding relations, deepening the relationship between ASEAN and our partners.

Fourth, we have initiated to expand the East Asia Summit (EAS) with membership of Russia and the United States when Vietnam holds the ASEAN Chairmanship of 2010, to expand the mechanism of the ASEAN Defense Minister Meeting Plus (ADMM Plus).

Fifthly, Vietnam has twice successfully assumed the role of ASEAN Chair in 1998 and 2010, with specific contributions and initiatives.

In addition, in responding to the challenges of ASEAN, we also make concrete contributions such as to the development of a Declaration on the Conduct of Parties (DOC) with a view to the maintenance of peace and stability in the South China Sea.

Now let me turn to the cuisines!

With its 54 ethnic groups, when joining ASEAN, Vietnam has enriched the ASEAN diversified culture and cuisines. Looking towards the 50th ASEAN Day, we celebrate the diversity of ASEAN culture and cuisine with Vietnamese cuisine.

May I express the special thank to Mr. Thi, the owner of the Saigon Restaurant, and his chef and the staffs who has tried the best to promote Vietnamese cuinsines in South Africa. This is truly the best Vietnamese restaurant in town as it has no competitor here.

Thank you very much and please enjoy Vietnamese food.
