Australia Day 2018

26 January 2017

High Commissioner of Australia in South Africa, Mr Adam McCarthy hosted a screening of 'Priscilla, Queen of the Desert' at his official residence in Pretoria.

'They came, they conquered, they looked fabulous!' is the payoff line of the 1994 Australian comedy-drama and guests came dressed colourfully and took photos in front of 'Priscilla'.

The movie follows two drag queens played by Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce and a transgender woman, played by Terence Stamp, as they journey across the Australian Outback from Sydney to Alice Springs in a tour bus that they have named "Priscilla", along the way encountering various groups and individuals. They rehearsed and performed their drag act along the journey with a final show at a casino in Alice Springs.

One of the towns where filming took place was Broken Hill in New South Wales. In one scene from the bus in Broken Hill one can, in the distance, see a town. This town is Silverton and High Commissioner McCarthy said this was where his grandfather had settled in 1902, having come from Ireland.

The screening was also to mark Australia officially becoming the 26th country to legalise same-sex marriage after the law was passed on 7 December with the overwhelming backing of Australia's Federal Parliament.

Also present at the screening was the Australian Netball Diamonds who are on the South African leg of the 2018 Quad Series. They are currently ranked number one in the world.
