Austrian Leadership Programs (ALPS)

10 September 2018

Austrian Ambassador to South Africa Dr. Johann Brieger, MBA hosted participants of the the Austrian Leadership Programs (ALPS) for South African candidates of the program at his residence in Pretoria, South Africa.

South Africa is Austria’s most important trading partner in Africa. The ongoing increase in trade and the development of commercial ties between Austria and South Africa in key areas - such as the automotive sector, the development of infrastructure, renewable energy and tourism - are steadily on the increase.

The ALPS is the Austrian Foreign Ministry’s professional exchange program that is organized together with the Austrian Economic Chamber, the Federation of Austrian Industries and the Diplomatic Academy.

Every year, 100 international leading executives with an economic or political background are invited to participate in four editions taking place in Austria, each of them lasting 6 days.

There is no application for ALPS. Candidates are nominated and selected by Austrian Embassies and Advantage Austria offices around the world. An assessment considering political and economic factors depicts roughly 50 countries that are going to be of particular interest for Austria’s politics/economy in the near future. Austrian embassies covering these 50 countries are assigned to identify potential participants meeting specific criteria defined by the Ministry.

Invited participants will have the opportunity to meet CEOs of Austrian global leading companies and exchange thoughts with representatives of both Austria’s public life and international organisations. Moreover, candidates are invited to a meet and greet with Austria’s Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz.

For every edition of the ALPS, a federal state of Austria is chosen in addition to Vienna. The federal state’s leading companies will then be incorporated in the program. In the first edition, participants had the chance to get to know RED BULL in Salzburg whilst candidates of ALPS-2 got an insight granted into MAGNA in Styria. Participants of the third edition visited SWAROVSKI in the Tyrol amongst others.

In accordance with the program’s claim “Networks.Create.Future” the goal of the ALPS is to create a longlasting and beneficial network comprising of ALPS-Alumni and leading representatives of Austria’s economy and public life. Additionally, ALPS-Alumni should in the long run feel connected to Austria which is ensured by the Alumni-program. ALPS-Alumni are therefore invited to events taking place at the premises of the Austrian embassy among other initiatives.

All expenses incurring in the course of the ALPS (economy flight ticket, roundtrip airport to hotel and back, accommodation, transportation, cultural program, meals, insurance for the stay in Austria) are covered by the Austrian Foreign Ministry.
