2019 Changwon K-POP World Festival

15 May 2019

The 2019 Changwon K-Pop World Festival regional round was held in South Africa on 1 May at the Atterbury Theatre in Lynnwood, Pretoria. This has become a popular annual event and is hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in South Africa.

Mr Jong-dae Park, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea (pictured with contestants) was happy to see the number of K-Pop followers growing in South Africa and that it has become a worldwide phenomenon.

Psy's "Gangnam Style" music video was the first Korean YouTube video to reach one billion views and it certainly played a big role in the popularisation of Korean pop music. BTS, also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a seven-member South Korean boy band formed in Seoul in 2013. The band is the first Korean act to have topped the U.S. Billboard 200.

The many fans and participants at the regional round showed off their knowledge of K-Pop by correctly identifying artists and songs, sometimes just from a mimicked dance move by the host, and thereby winning prizes.

The winners this year for vocal were:
1st - Persis
2nd - Lauwrinda Hartley
3rd - Haana Lu
Ambassador`s prize - Stehanie Toerien

The winners for cover dance performance were:
1st - Susan Nkata
2nd - South Mujigae
3rd - TMNTG
Ambassador`s prize - New Attitude

Around 100 countries participate in the regional rounds and winners have a chance of being invited to join the Final Round contest together with the winners of the other regional rounds. The semi-final will take place in August and the final round will be hosted in October in Changwon.

Last year a South African winner made it to the final round in Changwon, Korea.
