Mexico and SA – a people centred friendship

17 September 2019

The 209th Anniversary of the Independence of Mexico was celebrated in festive Mexican style in Pretoria where guests enjoyed Mexican food, drink, music and dance.

Ms Ana Luisa Fajer, Ambassador of Mexico to South Africa said that in a world that is more inclined to pessimism and bad news, focusing on people to people connections, should be the driving force.

“Mexico’s diverse and rich cultures, as well as our indigenous traditions that blend with contemporary artistic expressions, provide an excellent platform to generate genuine interactions, and consequently, build positive relationships between people. This is when conversations happen, and political and economic dialogue can flow easily.”

The twinning of the Tule tree from Oaxaca and the Sagole Baobab from Limpopo, a cooperation to be signed later this year has the people at its centre.

In August, the Mexican Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Julián Ventura, visited South Africa and together with Deputy Minister Alvin Botes, led the political consultations meeting, in which they reaffirmed their friendship and working in tandem to promote a constructive and positive global agenda.
