A Green and Sustainable Gabon

By Ambassador Andre William Anguile of Gabon to South Africa

Gabon is committed to the preservation of its biodiversity and the struggle against climate change

17 August 2022

Today marks the 62nd anniversary of Gabon’s Independence.

Gabon and South Africa have been enjoying excellent and ever increasing relations since Presidents Nelson Mandela and Omar Bongo Ondimba decided to make of this fraternal bilateral link an example for the rest of the continent. Today, South Africa is a reliable partner for the Gabonese Republic, but of course more needs to be accomplished in the near future, most notably in the quest for green energy solutions, climate change, ecotourism and sustainable mining.

Gabon firmly hopes that the restoration of a direct flight between Johannesburg and Libreville that was stopped in January 2018, will reboot exchanges between all these sectors and reinstate the trade and travel links between SADC and CEMAC. This would represent the beginning of a milestone for the African Continental Free Trade Platform.

As a current non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council since January 2022 for the fourth time, Gabon will definitely endeavour to implement the four pillars of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325, Prevention, Participation, Protection and Relief & Recovery as well as climate change, women’s economic empowerment, and monitoring.

Along with the sister republics of Ghana and Kenya, as non-permanent members until 2023, Gabon will push the agenda of the African Continental Free Trade Area with a view to accelerating intra-African trade and boosting Africa’s trading position in the global market by strengthening Africa’s common voice and policy space in global trade negotiations.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank The Diplomatic Society magazine for its continued assistance and media projection in South Africa of the diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited here and beyond.
