Ambassador Ahmed Hassan, Charge d’Affairs of Yemen to South Africa commemorated the 60th Anniversary of the September 26 Revolution with his fellow compatriots in Cape Town. Yemen also celebrates Liberation Day on October 14, which marks the beginning of the uprising against British rule in 1963. On November 30 the country celebrates Independence Day celebrated as the anniversary of the declaration of independence from the United Kingdom in 1967.

Yemen is a country in Western Asia on the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders Saudi Arabia to the north and Oman to the northeast and shares maritime borders with Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia. Sana’a, the capital, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

Hassan said that the glorious revolution of September 26 is the event in the contemporary history of Yemen which catapulted the country from the Middle Ages to the Modern Era with the eradication of the obscurantist Imamate Era.

Hassan noted that this celebration takes place under difficult circumstances. The devastating conflict in Yemen that began in 2014 has left the country in a humanitarian crisis that is said to be among the worst in the world. He said that the Houthi coup militia who started the war has rejected all regional and international peace efforts and initiatives.

Akram Al-Khatib, President of the Yemeni Community in South Africa delivered a speech in which he congratulated the political leadership represented by Rashad M. Al-Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council on behalf of the Yemeni community and students in South Africa. He also thanked the South African authorities for their hospitality and cooperation in providing services to them.

The celebration ended with music and dancing.
