Harties - Lekker by die Dam

7 February 2023

Located about an hour outside of South Africa’s capital city, Pretoria, situated in the North West province, is the premier inland water recreation area of Hartebeestpoort Dam. Built in the early 1900’s the 1620 hectare dam provides irrigation to neighbouring farmland on which wheat, fruit, lucerne and other produce are grown. Nestled among the picturesque Magaliesberg mountain range, along the banks of the Crocodile River, the surroundings offer the international and local traveller and ideal getaway. Its proximity to the city also makes it ideal for the day visitor.

The invader hyacinth that once covered a large percent of the dam surface has returned and the local authorities and residents have begun removing the pesky vegetation and are seeking ways to find alternative uses for the plant which include organic fertilizer and feed for livestock. This is welcome news for property and resort owners for whom the dam is key.

The Yacht Club which was established in 1923 is keen to bring the hyacinth under control and ramp up their activities. Sailing, water skiing, fishing, canoeing, sunset and sunrise cruises, as well private functions are amongst some of the fun and recreation to be had. The surrounding farmlands and rural settings are home to a wide range of hiking and nature trails, and caravanning and camping sites that brings you close to nature.

The 4x4 off-road vehicle trails, mountain bike paths and cross country trails found in the rugged mountainous landscape offers thrilling adventure for enthusiasts. Champagne breakfasts, hot air balloon rides and a cable car ride to the highest point on the Magaliesberg, where breath-taking views of the mountain range are visible, are some of the attractions on offer to the visitor to the area. Birders and animal lovers will find much to satisfy their interests. Restaurants are aplenty offering cuisine to suit every taste and there are a range of African curios, arts and crafts on offer.

The area is dotted with resorts, lodges, guest houses and venues for custom events, weddings and other celebratory functions, and even for a romantic getaway. Conferencing, meetings, teambuilding and leadership training facilities are also available.
