On the 11th, the Mining Committee of the China Economic and Trade Association of South Africa held the 2023 Mining Compliance Lecture and Exchange Meeting at Sinosteel Building, which aims to promote cooperation between South Africa and China in the mining field and improve the compliance level of participating enterprises.
Minister Counsellor Liu Yu of the Economic and Commercial Office of the Chinese Embassy in South Africa attended the event, which also brought together representatives of Chinese enterprises in South Africa, including Sinosteel Group, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Representative Office in South Africa, Legal and Compliance Department of South African Economic and Trade Association, Feiding South Africa, Hebei Iron and Steel, Zijin South Africa, Yingke South Africa, etc. Attendees gathered to discuss the latest trends and challenges in mining compliance.
Venolan Naidoo, National President of the Labour Law Association of South Africa, Bongiwe Mabusela of the Ministry of Mines, Paul Fouche, representative of the well-known law firm FASKEN, and Advocate Adv. Michael Van As, along with Charles Young and Wandisile Mandlana on behalf of the well-known law firm Bowmans, gave in-depth presentations on employment law, mine health and safety, strikes and misconduct in strikes, and compliance requirements and consequences of non-compliance in the mining charter.

She congratulated the success of the event and mentioned that it was an important step in the cooperation between China and South Africa in the field of mining, and an opportunity to further deepen the economic and trade relations between the two sides. She stressed the importance of complying with compliance regulations for all Chinese companies in South Africa to ensure that their business activities are lawful and orderly. The Chinese Embassy in South Africa will fully support the compliance operation of Chinese enterprises in South Africa and provide necessary assistance and support. She also emphasized that all enterprises should do a good job in personnel and production safety, ensure that the rights and interests of employees are protected, and any safety issues that occur in the process of enterprise operation will be concerned and dealt with.

Ms. Mabusela introduced the South African Department of Mines' policy requirements for miners and expectations for each miner. She explained in depth the latest developments in South Africa's mining regulations, highlighted the need for compliance for sustainable mining development, and expressed the government's expectations for mining companies to operate responsibly.

In the area of mine health and safety, the keynote speakers introduced the latest mine health and safety regulations, highlighted the need for safety standards through practical cases, and shared effective safety management practices and experiences in responding to unexpected incidents.
In terms of strikes and misconduct during strikes, the keynote speakers analysed possible strikes in the mining sector and their impacts, while delving into the possible misconduct during strikes, and providing strategies and legal support.
In terms of the compliance requirements and consequences of the mining charter, the keynote speaker introduced the compliance requirements of the South African mining charter in detail, emphasized the importance of compliance to the sustainable development of enterprises, and shared the relevant policies and successful experiences of enterprises in complying with the mining charter, as well as the consequences of possible violations.

After the lecture, the participants actively participated in the Q&A session and had an in-depth exchange on the problems encountered by their respective enterprises in terms of compliance. The experts not only answered the participants' questions in detail, but also shared more practical experiences and provided more comprehensive compliance guidance for enterprises.
The seminar and exchange meeting on mining compliance built a bridge for communication and cooperation between mining enterprises in China and South Africa, and laid a solid foundation for future economic and trade cooperation. The Mining Committee of the South African China Economic and Trade Association said that it will continue to actively organize similar activities to promote the common development of the two countries in the mining field.
