The Embassy of the Philippines in South Africa, in collaboration with Kunst ArtFilipino, has unveiled Viaje 5: Filipinism – What Makes Art Filipino, an art exhibition that explores the essence of Filipino identity through a rich tapestry of visual expression. Held at the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria, the exhibition runs until 30 April, inviting art lovers, cultural enthusiasts, and the general public to experience the bold and heartfelt visions of four renowned Filipino artists.
Curated with an eye for both tradition and contemporary flair, the exhibition features works by Aris Bagtas, Remo Valenton, Loriel Castillo and Dale Bagtas, each bringing their own unique interpretation of what it means to be Filipino.
The term "Filipinism" in the title is more than a theme, it is a question, a statement, and a celebration. The artists delve into concepts of nationhood, resilience, spirituality, and cultural heritage using a variety of mediums.
Visitors to Viaje 5: Filipinism will not only have the opportunity to view and purchase these beautiful artworks, but will also be able to engage directly with the artists and hear first-hand about their journeys and inspiration.
Kunst ArtFilipino, the co-organiser of the exhibition, plays a key role in promoting Filipino talent globally. Their mission is to provide platforms for both emerging and established Filipino artists, helping them gain international recognition while fostering cultural exchange.
In her opening remarks, Ambassador of the Philippines to South Africa, Noralyn Jubaira Baja emphasized the importance of art in diplomacy. Introducing the four talented artists she said that they each share the spirit of giving back to society. They have been involved in projects such as art appreciation classes, art therapy workshops and donating their artworks at charity events. “Their artworks mirror the concept of Filipinism, which is a movement of the Philippines art scene whose guiding philosophy is to allow Filipino visual artists to infuse the essence of being Filipino while embracing modern creative expression and experiences into their artworks.”
