At a time when schools are struggling financially, it is heart-warming to be recognised as one of the institutions that has been earmarked for financial assistance as well as student learnership opportunities between South Africa and China.

At the launch of the Mandarin Teaching Station of Confucius Institute at Clairwood Secondary School on Monday 2nd November 2019 the Ambassador Lin Songtian furnished the station with computers, printers and laptops which will allow free Mandarin lessons to be taught under the expert tutorship of a qualified Mandarin tutor in 2020.

Clairwood Secondary School students who excel in this language will be given the opportunity to win scholarships, this enabling them to further their studies in China.

The Chinese Embassy in South Africa has donated R500 000 towards the refurbishment, repairs and renovations to the infrastructure of the school. This cash injection will definitely create an atmosphere more conducive to teaching and learning.

Hisense (a subsidiary company of China) has shown keen interest in advancing the careers in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning by offering learnership opportunities to students. Clairwood Secondary School is seriously forging ahead in its endeavours to introduce Refrigeration and Air Conditioning as a technical subject at the school.

Beijing Automobile Industry Holding Company’s (BAIC) CEO Mr. Zhany His has offered learnership programmes and employment at their factory in Port Elizabeth.

Clairwood Secondary School regards these contributions as a silver lining, in light of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, to the lives of their learners. It is the fervent wish of the Principal and staff that current and prospective learners grab these opportunities which will open doors for them, not only locally but globally as well.

In the wise words of our late President Mr Nelson Mandela: “remember education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”.

Clairwood Secondary School and its staff sincerely believe that the partnership between the school and the Chinese Embassy will uplift the lives of their learners and hence the lives of the people of South Africa.

In September 2019 Principal Mr Y Naidoo was granted a fully sponsored trip to China and attended the International Principal’s Conference 2019 in Shanghai. Whilst visiting many schools Mr Naidoo was impressed with the excellent levels of education and the investment of the Chinese Government in educating its youth. It is Mr Naidoo’s sincere wish that South Africa can imbibe such fervour to empower its youth.
