German Embassy Pretoria contributes to Nelson Mandela International Day 2013{besps}stories/madibagermany|width=350|height=300|align=4{/besps}

For the Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July, the German Embassy Pretoria – in close cooperation with Hon MP Joanmariae Fubbs – donated books, a computer with library software and a photocopy machine to East Bank High School in Alexandra, Johannesburg. The total value of the donation is R100,000.

East Bank High School is located in Alexandra, one of the most economically disadvantaged townships around Johannesburg. Approximately 1700 students attend the school, of which the two main languages are Sepedi and Isizulu.

Hon MP Fubbs, Ambassador Freitag of Germany in South Africa, a representative of the Presidency as well as the Gauteng Legislature delivered the donated items to the school and filled the shelves of the library with new books.

According to Ambassador Freitag, “Education is what builds a nation. Without books, there can be no education. And as Nelson Mandela so eloquently said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’ In this spirit, we decided to provide books – in fact, a new library – and a computer to East Bank High School in Alexandra as a contribution.”
