South African Embassy in Philippines celebrate International Mandela Day

On 18 JULY 2013 the South African Embassy in Manila, Philippines unveiled two projects in celebration of International Nelson Mandela Day. The first project was a traveling photo exhibition at RCBC Plaza in Makati City jointly organized by the Embassy and the United Nations to honor the passion and struggles of former President Nelson Mandela as well as depicting his political and personal life.
The exhibition was officially inaugurated by Ambassador Agnes Nyamande-Pitso of South Africa in the Philippines and by the United Nations Resident Coordinator (ad interim) Mr. Tomoo Hozumi. United Nations Agencies, Ambassadors, members of the Diplomatic Corps, South Africans and local business attended the launch. During this event, guests and the general public were invited to fill-up the pledge cards to indicate their commitment in inspiring change in their respective communities. Following this launch, the photo exhibition will be traveling to three Universities in Metro Manila and will culminate at the new SM Aura Mall on 13 August 2013 to enable the exhibition to also coincide with South African National Women’s Day on 9 August 2013.

The second project was an outreach project in partnership with GMA 7 Network, ChildHope Asia Foundation, Aspen Philippines, South African Airways, Gold Fields Philippines Corporation, Federated Distributers Inc. and Club Marinduque hosted 50 street kids from ChildHope Asia Foundation. The kids were entertained by GMA 7 talents such as Tropang Potchi, Bea Binene, Ken Chan, Rafael Rosell and Diva Montelaba as well as the puppet show conducted by Carlo Magno.
In view of this year’s theme “Take Action, inspire change”, all partners were invited to write on the Pledge board how they intend to continue inspiring change in their respective communities. There was also a symbolic handover ceremony of the Maloof skate board courtesy of the Northern Cape Province’s Department of Tourism and Economic Development to Ms Teresita Silva, President of the ChildHope Asia Foundation by Ambassador Agnes Nyamande-Pitso. At the end of the activities, the Ambassador joined the kids in wishing Happy Birthday to Former President Nelson Mandela.
