Staff at Flemingo Duty Free Pretoria embraced the opportunity to celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day by giving of their time and service to improve the lives of others.
Flemingo Duty Free honored Madiba’s legacy on Thursday 18 July, on his 95th birthday, through a feeding scheme initiative in partnership with The Potato Foundation.
The company provided a nutritious meal and party pack for 250 underprivileged learners at Booysens Primary School in Pretoria. Most learners live in informal settlements and their parents cannot provide lunch for them during school. As daily nutrition is important for proper development and health, the feeding scheme serves many purposes. It will prevent starvation and malnutrition, improve learners’ performance at school and assist with mental, emotional and physical needs.
Staff assisted with setting up the school hall, dishing and serving the food, doing the dishes and cleaning up as part of their 67minutes of doing good for humanity. In addition they went to each class handing out party packs and interacting with the learners.
As we spent a lot of money to provide food and party packs for these learners, we slowly realized that it was not the money but the time spent with these children that made a significant difference in their lives.
Mr. Joao Pedro, Manager- Retail RSA said, “The event was an eye opening experience. It was humbling yet enjoyable.”
Mrs. Shazrah Cassim, Public Relations Officer said, “It was a truly rewarding experience. The appreciation and smile on all the learners faces was certainly heart warming.”
Team Flemingo strongly supports the following quote:
“We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference.”- Dr. Nelson Mandela
