Mandela Day in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal Premier; Dr Zweli Mkhize along with religious leaders released 95 balloons at the Mandela capture site to celebrate President Nelson Mandela's 95 birthday in Howick.
“We are very lucky to have lived among people who have had such an impact in the fight for liberations,” said Dr Mkhize.
He said KZN was home to Mahatma Gandhi, whose granddaughter Ela Gandhi was one of the guests at the prayer. It is also significant in that it is the last place where Mandela was a free man before spending 27 years in prison after his arrest outside Howick.
“As we celebrate Tata's birthday, we must always remember the legacy he has left us with, a legacy of peace and stability, democracy, freedom, and a legacy that transcends race or religious divide,” said Dr Mkhize.
