Vietnam marks 81 years since the August Revolution and the declaration of independence on September 2, 1945, with a remarkable record of national transformation, economic development and growing international engagement.
Since President Ho Chi Minh proclaimed independence at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, Vietnam has travelled a challenging path from war and underdevelopment to becoming one of Asia's dynamic and increasingly open economies.
The country's Doi Moi (Renewal) reforms have been central to this transformation. Vietnam recorded 8.02% economic growth in 2025, followed by 8.18% growth in the first half of 2026. International trade exceeded US$930 billion in 2025, while foreign direct investment continues to expand, reflecting growing confidence in Vietnam as a manufacturing, investment and connectivity hub.
Major infrastructure development has accompanied this economic rise. Expressways, coastal roads, airports, seaports, bridges and urban rail systems are strengthening connectivity across the country and linking Vietnamese businesses more effectively with regional and global markets.
Development has also remained focused on improving people's lives. By the end of 2025, Vietnam's multidimensional poverty rate had fallen to 2.95%, while health insurance coverage exceeded 95% of the population. Education, healthcare, social protection and housing programmes remain important components of the country's development strategy.
At the same time, Vietnam is positioning science, technology, innovation and digital transformation as new engines of growth. Emerging capabilities in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, biotechnology and big data are supporting the country's transition towards a more technology-driven economy.
Vietnam's transformation is equally evident in its international relations. The country now maintains diplomatic relations with all 193 UN member states, participates actively in multilateral institutions and has developed comprehensive strategic partnerships with major countries. Its re-election to the UN Human Rights Council for 2026-2028 and contributions to international humanitarian efforts illustrate its growing role as a responsible member of the international community.
Tourism and cultural diplomacy are also strengthening Vietnam's global profile. The country welcomed a record 21.2 million international visitors in 2025, while its rich tangible and intangible cultural heritage continues to gain international recognition.
After 81 years, Vietnam's story is therefore one of resilience, renewal and transformation. From the struggle for independence to economic modernisation and deeper international integration, the country is entering a new phase in which innovation, connectivity, diplomacy and sustainable development are shaping its future.
